ABSTRACT White mold, caused by the fungus Sclerotinia sclerotiorum, is a disease of agronomic importance that affects crops such as soybeans and beans. Considered an aggressive pathogen, it causes symptoms in different parts of the plant, and its control is difficult due to the formation of resistance structures called sclerotia, which allow it to survive in the soil for long periods. The objective of the present study was to evaluate the effectiveness of different concentrations of pyroligneous extract (PE) from sugar cane in suppressing the carpogenic germination of S. sclerotiorum in vitro. The concentrations tested were 0; 1,000; 2,000; 3,000; 4,000 and 5,000 ppm. The extract was incorporated into water agar medium and poured into gerbox boxes with 20 sclerotia. The total number of sclerotia with emission of stipes and apothecia, the total number of sclerotia with emission of stipes and the total number of sclerotia with apothecia were quantified. There was a significant difference in carpogenic germination between the treatments evaluated. Increasing concentrations of sugarcane PE negatively affected the carpogenic germination of sclerotia, the number of stipes per sclerotium and the number of apothecia formed per sclerotium. It was found that sugarcane PE did not inhibit the formation of stipes, but made it difficult to differentiate them into apothecium, especially at the concentration of 5,000 ppm. Sugarcane PE at concentrations of 4,000 and 5,000 ppm promoted reduction in the percentage of germinated sclerotia, as well as in the number of apothecia per sclerotium.

RESUMO: Nos últimos anos, a eficiência do controle de Phakopsora pachyrhizi por fungicidas tem sido reduzida, dificultando o manejo da ferrugem asiática da soja, o que ocasiona o comprometimento da produtividade. O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar o efeito da adição do peróxido de hidrogênio (H2O2) em misturas comerciais fungicidas no controle da ferrugem da soja. Foram realizados dois ensaios, um em ambiente de casa de vegetação e outro em condições de campo. Em ambos ambientes foram estudados quatro programas de controle com formulações comerciais: I) azoxistrobina + ciproconazole (IQe + IDM); II) picoxistrobina + ciproconazole (IQe + IDM); III) piraclostrobina + epoxiconazole + fluxapiroxade (IQe + IDM + ISDH); IV) água - H2O (sem aplicação fungicida) associados à: i) peróxido de hidrogênio - H2O2, ii) mancozebe (controle positivo I), iii) clorotalonil (controle positivo II) e iv) água - H2O (sem associação). Análises de área foliar lesionada e de rendimento de grãos revelaram que a adição de peróxido de hidrogênio nas misturas de fungicidas IDMs e IQes proporcionou uma redução na severidade da doença entre 33 a 44% comparado aos produtos isolados, incremento na produtividade e maiores índices SPAD. O uso isolado do peróxido de hidrogênio e dos fungicidas multissítios não resultou em controle da ferrugem da soja. A utilização do H2O2 associado a misturas comerciais fungicidas, além de aprimorar a eficiência de controle, demonstra possibilidade de uso como ferramenta para manejo da resistência e redução dos prejuízos provenientes da ferrugem asiática da soja.

ABSTRACT: In recent years, there have been reductions in the efficacy of the fungicidal control of Phakopsora pachyrhizi, thereby hindering the management of soybean rust and compromising crop yield. This study evaluated the effects of incorporating hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) in commercial fungicide formulations on the control of soybean rust. We conducted two experiments, one of which was performed in a greenhouse environment and the other under field conditions. In both environments, we examined the following four control programs using commercial fungicide formulations: (I) azoxystrobin + cyproconazole (quinone outside inhibitor [QoI] + demethylation inhibitor [DMI]); (II) picoxystrobin + cyproconazole (QoI + DMI); (III) pyraclostrobin + epoxiconazole + fluxapyroxad (QoI + DMI + succinate dehydrogenase inhibitor); and (IV) water (H2O) (program without fungicide application), combined with the incorporation of (i) H2O2; (ii) mancozeb (positive control I); (iii) chlorothalonil (positive control II); or (iv) water (H2O) alone. Analyses of infected leaf area and grain yield revealed that the addition of H2O2 to the formulations of DMI and QoI fungicides led to a reduction in disease severity of between 33% and 44% relative to the effects of these products used alone, as well as an increase in yield and SPAD values. The use of H2O2 and multi-site fungicides alone failed to provide effective control of soybean rust. In addition to enhancing the efficacy of disease control, the use of H2O2 associated with commercial fungicide mixtures was shown to be a potential tool for the management of fungicide resistance and reduction in losses from Asian soybean rust.

Resumo O objetivo deste trabalho foi estimar os parâmetros genéticos de genótipos de mandioca (Manihot esculenta) cultivados em campo, bem como a divergência genética entre eles, para identificar quais apresentam maior resistência à antracnose e à bacteriose. Foram realizados três experimentos independentes, tendo-se avaliado 133 acessos e nove cultivares comerciais de mandioca distribuídos em cinco blocos, com cinco plantas por parcela, em cada experimento. No primeiro experimento, as plantas foram submetidas à inoculação de Xanthomonas phaseolis pv. manihotis (bacteriose). No segundo, as plantas foram submetidas à inoculação de Colletotrichum gloeosporioides f. sp. manihotis (antracnose). No terceiro, realizado em delineamento de blocos aumentados e sob ocorrência natural das doenças, foram feitas avaliações visuais das plantas por escala de notas. A herdabilidade foi utilizada como parâmetro genético, e o método de grupos de pares não ponderados com média aritmética foi aplicado para determinação de divergência genética e agrupamento. No terceiro experimento, detectaram-se diferenças genéticas entre os acessos, que foram avaliados quanto à área abaixo da curva de progressão da doença (AUDPC) para antracnose e bacteriose. No primeiro e no terceiro experimento de bacteriose, as chances de sucesso na seleção de acessos resistentes são maiores, em razão dos altos valores de herdabilidade obtidos. Os acessos BGM-1170 e BGM-1134 mostram as menores médias de AUDPC e são considerados resistentes à antracnose e à bacteriose.

Abstract The objective of this work was to estimate the genetic parameters of cassava (Manihot esculenta) genotypes cultivated in the field, as well as the genetic divergence between them, in order to identify which ones show a greater resistance to anthracnose and bacteriosis. Three independent experiments were carried out, evaluating 133 accessions and nine commercial cultivars of cassava distributed in five blocks, with five plants per plot in each experiment. In the first experiment, the plants were subjected to inoculation with Xanthomonas phaseoli pv. manihotis (bacteriosis). In the second, the plants were subjected to inoculation with Colletotrichum gloeosporioides f. sp. manihotis (anthracnose). In the third, carried out in an augmented block design and under naturally occurring diseases, visual evaluations of the plants were performed using a rating scale. Heritability was used as a genetic parameter, and the unweighted pair group method with arithmetic mean was applied to determine genetic divergence and clustering. In the third experiment, genetic variability was detected among accessions, which were evaluated for the area under the disease progress curve (AUDPC) for anthracnose and bacteriosis. In the first and third experiments of bacteriosis, the chances of success in the selection of resistant accessions are higher due to the high heritability values obtained. The BGM-1170 and BGM-1134 accessions show the lowest mean for AUDPC and are considered resistant to anthracnose and bacteriosis.

RESUMO O uso excessivo de produtos químicos na cultura do mamão (Carica papaya) coloca em risco a eficácia de fungicidas, em razão dos problemas de resistência dos patógenos a esses produtos, além da possibilidade de resíduos tóxicos colocarem em risco a saúde humana e o ambiente. Diante disto, o presente trabalho teve por objetivo avaliar a eficácia de produtos naturais no controle de Colletotrichum gloeosporioides, in vitro e in vivo. No ensaio in vitro, avaliou-se os extratos aquosos de cravo-da-índia (Syzygium aromaticum) e canela (Cinnamomum zeylanicum) a 15%, quitosana 4%, isoladamente, a associação desses extratos de plantas com quitosana a 4% e, também, o fungicida procloraz (100 mg L-1), adicionados ao meio de cultura BDA, quanto ao efeito sobre o crescimento micelial do fungo, mantendo-se uma testemunha sem adição de produtos. O tratamento com o extrato aquoso de cravo-da-índia a 15% e sua associação com a quitosana, inibiram o crescimento micelial. A associação de quitosana com o extrato aquoso de canela foi mais eficaz na redução do crescimento micelial do que os dois isoladamente. No ensaio in vivo, os frutos de mamoeiro Formosa foram submetidos aos tratamentos por imersão: 1 – Testemunha (água destilada); 2 Testemunha – fungicida procloraz (Sportak® 450 EC) na concentração de 0,75 mL L-1; 3 – quitosana (4%); 4 – extrato aquoso de cravo-da-índia (10%); 5 – extrato aquoso de canela (30%); 6– extrato aquoso de cravo da índia (10%) + quitosana (4%); 7 – extrato aquoso de canela (30%) + quitosana (4%). Após 24h, os frutos foram inoculados com C. gloeosporioides e avaliados quanto à severidade da doença a cada dois dias. Observou-se, que apenas na terceira avaliação, os tratamentos com fungicida e extrato aquoso de canela a 30% associado à quitosana a 4% reduziram a severidade da doença, comparados à testemunha. Avaliando-se a área abaixo da curva de progresso da doença, observou-se que o tratamento com extrato aquoso de cravo também foi eficaz em reduzir a severidade da antracnose nos frutos.

ABSTRACT Excessive use of chemicals in papaya (Carica papaya L.) crops puts the efficacy of fungicides at risk because of the resistance problems of pathogens to these products, besides the possibility of toxic residues endangering the human health and the environment. Therefore, the present study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of natural products in controlling Colletotrichum gloeosporioides in vitro and in vivo. In the in vitro assay, the evaluated products were aqueous extracts of clove (Syzygium aromaticum) and cinnamon (Cinnamomum zeylanicum) at 1.5% and chitosan at 4%, separately, and the association of these plant extracts with 4% chitosan, as well as the fungicide prochloraz (100 mg L-1), added to PDA culture medium; they were evaluated for their effect on the mycelial growth of the fungus, maintaining a control without addition of products. The treatment with aqueous extract of clove at 15% and its association with chitosan inhibited mycelial growth. Association of chitosan with aqueous extract of cinnamon was more effective in reducing mycelial growth than the two products used separately. In the in vivo test, papaya ‘Formosa’ fruits were subjected to the following treatments by immersion: 1 - control (distilled water); 2 - control - fungicide prochloraz (Sportak® 450 EC) at a concentration of 0.75 mL L-1; 3 - chitosan (4%); 4 - aqueous extract of clove (10%); 5 - aqueous extract of cinnamon (30%); 6 - aqueous extract of clove (10%) + chitosan (4%); 7 - aqueous extract of cinnamon (30%) + chitosan (4%). After 24h, fruits were inoculated with C. gloeosporiodes and evaluated for the disease severity at every two days. Only in the third evaluation, treatments with fungicide and aqueous extract of cinnamon at 30% associated with chitosan at 4% reduced the disease severity, compared to control. The area under the disease progress curve indicated that the treatment with aqueous extract of clove was also effective in reducing the severity of anthracnose in fruits.

RESUMO O patógeno Sclerotinia Sclerotiorum pode atacar mais de 400 espécies de plantas, como batata, soja, girassol, entre outras. Objetivou-se identificar a proporção solo:areia mais adequada para a germinação carpogênica de escleródios de S. sclerotiorum, avaliar o efeito de extratos vegetais e suas frações sobre a germinação carpogênica do patógeno e sobre plantas de feijoeiro. Para os experimentos de identificação da melhor proporção solo:areia, calculou-se a porcentagem de germinação carpogênica. Para a avaliação do efeito de extratos vegetais e frações sobre escleródios, estes foram aplicados no dia da instalação do ensaio e 30 dias após a instalação do ensaio no substrato solo:areia (1:1) infestado com escleródios. Para avaliar o efeito dos extratos vegetais e frações sobre feijoeiro, os extratos vegetais foram aplicados via pulverização sobre as plantas, aos 30 dias após a semeadura. Os escleródios apresentaram maior germinação carpogênica na proporção 1:1 e 1:2 do substrato solo:areia. Houve menor germinação carpogênica sob a fração acetato de etila de ervilhaca e fração acetato de etila de S. terebinthifolius, quando estes foram aplicados aos 30 dias após a instalação do ensaio. Os extratos não apresentaram fitotoxicidade ao feijoeiro.

ABSTRACT The pathogen Sclerotinia sclerotiorum can attack over 400 plant species such as potatoes, soybeans and sunflowers. This study aimed to identify the most adequate soil:sand proportion for the carpogenic germination of S. sclerotiorum sclerotia, as well as to evaluate the effect of plant extracts and their fractions on the carpogenic germination of sclerotia and on common bean plants. To identify the most adequate soil:sand proportion, the percentage of carpogenic germination was calculated. To evaluate the effect of plant extracts and fractions on sclerotia, the extracts and fractions were applied on the day the experiment was installed and after 30 days in soil:sand (1:1) substrate infested with sclerotia. To evaluate the effect of plant extracts and fractions on bean plants, the plant extracts were sprayed on plants at 30 days after sowing. Sclerotia showed greater carpogenic germination at 1:1 and 1:2 soil:sand substrate proportions. There was lower carpogenic germination for the ethyl acetate fraction obtained from vetch and the ethyl acetate fraction from S. terebinthifolius when applied at 30 days after the experiment was installed. The extracts did not present phytotoxicity to bean plants.

RESUMO: A brusone é uma doença causada pelo fungo Magnaporthe oryzae e de grande impacto para a triticultura. O estudo das respostas da planta aos patógenos tem auxiliado no manejo das doenças, e a identificação das plantas hospedeiras nas proximidades da lavoura é importante, assim como conhecer as reações de interação com o patógeno. O objetivo deste estudo foi determinar os eventos histológicos de plantas de trigo Digitaria insularis e Digitaria sanguinalis inoculadas com isolados de M. oryzae de plantas de arroz e trigo. Aos 33 dias da semeadura, as plantas cultivadas em estufa foram inoculadas com dois isolados de M. oryzae. O efeito observado nas plantas, 48 horas após a inoculação, mostrou interações diferentes para cada isolado do patógeno e entre as espécies de plantas. As plantas de trigo e D. sanguinalis foram os materiais com menores respostas de defesa à germinação, de produção de apressórios melanizados e penetração do apressório, com valores acima de 87, 90 e 43%, respectivamente. Entre os isolados do patógeno, o mais agressivo para germinação e produção de apressório melanizado foi o proveniente de plantas de arroz. A resposta de defesa da planta, como a morte celular, foi observada nas plantas de trigo inoculadas com isolado proveniente de plantas de arroz, enquanto não houve resposta de defesa da planta quando inoculada com isolado obtido de plantas de trigo, provavelmente por não ocorrer o reconhecimento do patógeno.

ABSTRACT: Blast disease, caused by the fungus Magnaporthe oryzae, has a major impact on wheat farming. The study of plant responses to pathogens has improved the management of this disease. Moreover, it is important to identify potential host plants in the crops’ vicinity and to understand reactions caused by plant-pathogen interactions. The objective of this study was to assess the histopathology of wheat plants, Digitaria insularis and Digitaria sanguinalis inoculated with M. oryzae isolates obtained either rice or wheat plants. Thirty-three days after sowing, greenhouse-grown plants of all three species were inoculated with each M. oryzae isolate. The observed effects (48 hours after inoculation) differed depending on the particular interaction between each pathogen isolate-plant species pair. For instance, wheat and D. sanguinalis had the weakest defensive response against spore germination, production of melanized appressoria, and appressorial penetration, with average values above 87, 90, and 43%, respectively, for these events in these plants. Furthermore, germination and appressoria melanization were more aggressive in the rice isolate than in the wheat isolate. Additionally, evidence for a defensive response (such as cell death) was observed in wheat plants inoculated with rice isolates. However, such a response was absent in plants inoculated using wheat isolates, presumably because pathogen recognition failed.

RESUMO: Este trabalho teve por objetivo avaliar, in vitro e in vivo, a eficácia de produtos naturais no controle da antracnose do mamão. Os experimentos in vitro foram instalados em delineamento inteiramente casualizado, sendo para a avaliação de crescimento micelial considerado o esquema fatorial 10 × 4 (tratamentos x períodos de avaliação) com oito repetições, com a esporulação avaliada ao final do experimento. Os tratamentos utilizados foram: extrato aquoso nas concentrações de 5 e 15% de Syzygium aromaticum (L.) Merr. & Perry (cravo-da-índia), Cinnamomum zeylanicum Breym (canela) e Zingiber officinalis Rox (gengibre), quitosana 1 e 3%, fungicida Procloraz a 100 µg.mL-1 e testemunha (sem tratamento). Para a avaliação da germinação de conídios, foram considerados seis tratamentos com cinco repetições. Foram utilizados os mesmos tratamentos, porém, nas concentrações de 7,5% de cada extrato (cravo-da-índia, canela e gengibre), 1,5% de quitosana, e 50 µg.mL-1 de Procloraz. Para o experimento in vivo, foram utilizados mamões “Formosa” “Tainung 1”, em delineamento inteiramente casualizado, sendo seis tratamentos com quatro repetições para avaliação de severidade de antracnose causada por Colletotrichum gloeosporioides. Os frutos foram tratados por imersão durante 5 minutos com extratos de cravo-da-índia, canela e gengibre a 15%, quitosana a 8% e testemunha com água destilada, e imersão por 2 minutos em fungicida Procloraz (33,75 g i.a./100 L). Os tratamentos com extrato de cravo-da-índia a 15% e quitosana a 8% foram eficazes em todas as avaliações, sendo uma alternativa viável ao fungicida Procloraz. Os tratamentos com extrato de gengibre foram menos eficientes, com controle intermediário para o extrato de canela.

ABSTRACT: We evaluated the efficacy of natural products in the control of papaya anthracnose, in vitro and in vivo. The in vitro experiments for evaluation of mycelial growth used a completely randomized 10 × 4 factorial design (treatments × evaluation periods) with eight replicates, with sporulation evaluated at the end of the experiment. The treatments involved the use of aqueous extract at concentrations of 5 and 15% for Syzygium aromaticum (L.) Merr. & Perry (clove), Cinnamomum zeylanicum Breym (cinnamon), and Zingiber officinalis Rox. (ginger); 1 and 3% chitosan; the fungicide Prochloraz at 100 µg.mL-1; and a control (no treatment). For evaluating conidia germination, we used six treatments with five replicates. The treatments included 7.5% of each extract (clove, cinnamon, and ginger), 1.5% chitosan, and 50 µg.mL-1 of Prochloraz. For the in vivo experiment, “Formosa” papaya “Tainung 1” was used in a completely randomized design, with six treatments and four replicates to evaluate the severity of anthracnose caused by Colletotrichum gloeosporioides. The fruits were treated by immersion for 5 min with 15% clove, cinnamon, and ginger extracts, 8% chitosan, and control with distilled water, and immersion for 2 min in Prochloraz (33.75 g a.i./100 L). The treatments with 15% clove extract and 8% chitosan were effective in all evaluations, resulting in a viable alternative to the fungicide Prochloraz. The treatments with ginger extract were less effective and those with cinnamon offered intermediate control.

RESUMO A soja é um produto agrícola mundial, justificando investimentos para reduzir fatores adversos à sua produção como a antracnose causada por Colletotrichum truncatum. Três experimentos foram conduzidos com o objetivo de avaliar o controle da antracnose por fungicidas, isolados ou em associação, na parte aérea da soja em duas épocas de semeadura na safra 2011/12 nas condições de Dourados e Maracaju (MS). O delineamento experimental utilizado foi em blocos casualizados com cinco repetições. Os tratamentos foram: testemunha, carbendazim 250 g a.i. ha-1, piraclostrobina 66,5 g i.a. ha-1 + epoxiconazol 25 g i.a. ha-1, picoxistrobina 60 g i.a. ha-1 + ciproconazol 24 g i.a. ha-1, carbendazim 250 g i.a. ha-1 + piraclostrobina 66,5 g i.a. ha-1 + epoxiconazol 25 g i.a. ha-1 e carbendazim 250 g i.a. ha-1 + picoxistrobina 60 g i.a.ha-1 + ciproconazol 24 g i.a.ha-1. Duas aplicações de fungicidas foram realizadas, a primeira no momento da detecção da doença no estádio R2 de desenvolvimento e a segunda 19 dias após. Foi avaliada a incidência e severidade média, desfolha, altura de plantas, altura da inserção da primeira vagem, número de vagens, produtividade e massa de mil grãos. Foi realizada a patologia de sementes com enfoque na incidência de C. truncatum. O uso de carbendazim, isolado ou em mistura, controlou a antracnose da soja na parte aérea e em sementes. A aplicação de fungicidas proporcionou redução na desfolha, menor porcentagem de pecíolos doentes, maior número de vagens, maior altura de plantas e ganhos na produtividade. Carbendazim + ciproconazol + picoxistrobina apresentou esporadicamente maior controle do que carbendazim isolado.

ABSTRACT The soybean is a worldwide agricultural product, and therefore justifies investments in reducing those factors that are unfavourable to production, such as anthracnose caused by Colletotrichum truncatum. Three experiments were carried out with the aim of evaluating the control of anthracnose by fungicides, either singly or in combination, in soybean shoots sown on two dates in the 2011/12 season, under the conditions found at Dourados and Maracaju in the State of Mato Grosso do Sul. An experimental design of randomised blocks with five replications was used. The treatments were: control, carbendazim 250 g a.i. ha-1, pyraclostrobin 66.5 g a.i. ha-1 + epoxiconazole 25 g a.i. ha-1, picoxystrobin 60 g a.i. ha-1 + cyproconazole 24 g a.i. ha-1, carbendazim 250 g a.i. g-1 + pyraclostrobin 66.5g a.i. ha-1 + epoxiconazole 25 g a.i. ha-1 and carbendazim 250 g a.i. ha-1 + picoxystrobin 60 g a.i. ha-1 + cyproconazole 24 g a.i. ha-1. Two fungicide applications were performed, the first when the disease was detected at development stage R2, and the second 19 days later. The following were evaluated: incidence and average severity, defoliation, plant height, first pod height, number of pods, productivity and thousand grain weight. Seed pathology was carried out focusing on the incidence of C. truncatum. The use of carbendazim, singly or combined, controlled anthracnose in the shoots and seeds of the soybean. The application of fungicides resulted in reduced defoliation, a lower percentage of diseased petioles, a greater number of pods, greater plant height and gains in productivity. Carbendazim + cyproconazole + picoxystrobin occasionally displayed greater control than did single carbendazim.

O trabalho propôs-se a verificar a transmissibilidade de Sclerotinia sclerotiorum de sementes de canola, cártamo, crambe, girassol, nabo forrageiro e níger inoculadas artificialmente e suas implicações na emergência de plântulas. O isolado fúngico foi repicado em placas de Petri, contendo meio BDA, incubado a 20ºC e fotoperíodo de 12 horas. Após o crescimento do patógeno, foram colocadas 50 sementes de cada cultura por placa, onde permaneceram por 20 horas. Como testemunha, utilizaram-se sementes incubadas nas mesmas condições, porém apenas em meio BDA. Observou-se que S. sclerotiorum pode ser transmitido para as plântulas das culturas quando associado às suas sementes, sendo estas uma importante fonte de inóculo. O fungo provocou tombamento de pré e pós-emergência em todas as espécies estudadas

The study aimed to verify the transmission of Sclerotinia sclerotiorum of rapeseed, safflower, crambe, sunflower, radish and niger seed (artificially inoculated) and its implications on seedling emergence. The fungal isolate was peaked in Petri dishes containing PDA medium and incubated at 20°C and 12 hours photoperiod. After the growth of the pathogen, 50 seeds were placed on each plate cultures where they remained for 20 hours. As a control we used seeds incubated under the same conditions, but only on PDA. It was observed that S. sclerotiorum can be transmitted to seedlings of crops when associated with its seeds, being an important source of inoculum. The fungus caused damping-off in all of the studied species

RESUMO No Brasil, Phakopsora pachyrhizi e Puccinia kuehnii são importantes patógenos das culturas da soja e cana-de-açúcar, respectivamente. Avaliou-se a germinação in vitro de uredinosporos de P. pachyrhizi eP. kuehnii sob diferentes adjuvantes comumente utilizados em caldas fungicidas. Foram utilizadas placas de Petri com 80 mm de diâmetro, contendo 10 mL de solução ágar-água (1,7%). Adicionou-se em cada placa 1 mL de suspensão de esporos, na concentração de 5x105 esporos mL-1, e 1 mL de solução de adjuvantes, no dobro da concentração da dose recomendada pelos fabricantes. Os adjuvantes testados foram Assist(r), Veget Oil(r), Natur Oil(r), Break Thru(r), Aureo(r), Silwet(r) e Nimbus(r); em adição, o tratamento Testemunha constou apenas da exposição dos uredinosporos em água destilada esterilizada. A partir de uma hora de exposição, todos os adjuvantes reduziram a germinação de uredinosporos de P. pachyrhizi . Uredinosporos do agente causal da ferrugem asiática da soja expostos aos adjuvantes Assist(r), Break Thru(r), Aureo(r) e Nimbus(r) tiveram menor germinação a partir de duas horas de exposição. A inibição da germinação dos uredinosporos de P. kuehnii pelos adjuvantes em relação ao tratamento Testemunha aconteceu a partir de 4 horas de exposição. Às 8 horas, uredinosporos de ferrugem alaranjada da cana-de-açúcar que foram expostos aos adjuvantes Veget Oil(r) e Break Thru(r) apresentaram redução na germinação de 96,6 e 94,8%, respectivamente, quando comparados com o tratamento Testemunha.

ABSTRACT In Brazil Phakopsora pachyrhizi and Puccinia kuehnii are important pathogens of soybeans and sugar cane, respectively. In vitro experiments were carried out in order to evaluate P. pachyrhizi and P. kuehniiurediniospore germination under different adjuvants used in fungicide sprays to control rust diseases. Petri dishes (80 mm diameter) containing 10 mL of agar-water (1.7%) were used. In each plate 1 mL of a spore suspension with 5x105 urediniospores and 1 mL solution of adjuvants with twice the concentratation for field sprays was added. Assist(r), Veget Oil(r), Natur Oil(r), Break Thru(r)Aureo(r), Silwet(r) and Nimbus(r) were evaluated. There was a control check treatment with water. P. pachyrhiziurediniospore germination was negatively affected by all adjuvants after 2 hours of exposition. Urediniospores of the Asian soybean rust exposed to Assist(r), Break Thru(r), Aureo(r) and Nimbus(r) had lower germination rates. Germination of P. kuehnii urediniospores was lower in all adjuvant treatments after 4 hours of exposition. At 8 hours of Veget Oil(r) and Break Thru(r) exposure urediniospores of the orange rust pathogen had 96.6 and 94.8% reduction in germination compared to control check treatment.

A germinação carpogênica e o crescimento micelial de Sclerotinia sclerotiorum foram avaliados sob extratos metanólicos de Annona cacans, A. coriacea, A. crassiflora, A. dioica, A. sylvatica, Geophila repens, Guettarda viburnoides, Palicourea crocea, Schinus terebinthifolius e Trichilia silvatica, e sob as frações hexânica, hidrometanólica, clorofórmica e acetato de etila de A. cacans e óleo essencial de S. terebinthifolius. A concentração utilizada foi de 1.000 ppm para os extratos e de 100 ppm para as frações. Os extratos vegetais e as frações foram incorporados em meio ágar-água, que foi vertido em caixas gerbox com 20 escleródios. O crescimento micelial foi avaliado em óleo essencial de S. terebinthifolius, nas concentrações de 0, 100 e 1.000 ppm, incorporado ao meio BDA (Batata-Dextrose-Ágar). A germinação carpogênica apresentou-se menor sob os extratos de G. repens, P. crocea e S. terebinthifolius e sob as frações acetato de etila e clorofórmica de A. cacans. O número de apotécios formados por gerbox foi menor com o extrato de A. cacans. O crescimento micelial apresentou 10% de inibição na maior concentração do óleo essencial de S. terebinthifolius.

Te efect of methanolic extracts of Annona cacans, A. coriacea, A. crassiflora, A. dioica, A. sylvatica, Geophila repens, Guettarda viburnoides, Palicourea crocea, Schinus terebinthifolius e Trichilia silvatica, and A. cacans hexane, ethyl etila, aqueous and chloroform fractions and the essential oil of S. terebinthifolius on mycelial growth and carpogenic germination of Sclerotinia sclerotiorum was evaluated. Te concentrations are 1,000 ppm for the extracts and 100 ppm for the fractions. To evaluate the germination, carpogenic, extracts and fractions were incorporated in agar-water that was poured into gerboxes where 20 sclerotia were distributed. To evaluate the mycelial growth, essential oil of S. terebinthifolius in concentrations of 0, 100 and 1,000 ppm was incorporated into the PDA and then poured into Petri dishes, to where pathogen mycelial discs were transferred. Extracts of G. repens, P. crocea and S. terebinthifolius and fractions ethyl acetate and chloroform of Annona cacans reduced the carpogenic germination of sclerotia of S. sclerotiorum and the extract of A. cacans reduced the number of apothecia formed. Mycelial growth showed 10% inhibition at the highest concentration of essential oil of S. terebinthifolius.

O trabalho objetivou avaliar o efeito da restrição hídrica, em meio de cultura agarizado, sobre a germinação de sementes de soja inoculadas com Sclerotinia sclerotiorum nos potenciais osmóticos de 0, -0,3, -0,6 e -0,9 MPa promovido pelo uso dos solutos manitol, MgCl e NaCl, em diferentes tempos de exposição das sementes ao patógeno (6, 12, 18, 24 e 30 horas) e a possibilidade de armazenamento das sementes inoculadas. Avaliaram-se o crescimento micelial de S. sclerotiorum nos meios modificados osmoticamente, a germinação das sementes submetidas à inoculação e, após o armazenamento das sementes inoculadas, a emergência em solo e transmissão do patógeno. Pelos resultados obtidos a adição de manitol ao meio de cultura BDA, nos potenciais osmóticos -0,3, -0,6 e -0,9 MPa, e de NaCl, -0,3 e -0,6 MPa, não restringe o crescimento micelial de S. sclerotiorum; os solutos utilizados até o potencial osmótico -0,9 MPa não interferiram na germinação de sementes de soja. Níveis de infecção satisfatórios foram obtidos com 24 horas de incubação em meio de cultura com restrição hídrica. Tanto a viabilidade das sementes como a do patógeno são mantidas após o armazenamento das sementes inoculadas em meio com restrição hídrica.

This study aimed to evaluate the effect of water restriction, in agar medium, on the germination of soybean seeds inoculated with Sclerotinia sclerotiorum at the osmotic potentials 0, -0.3, -0.6 and -0.9 MPa promoted by the use of the solutes mannitol, MgCl and NaCl, at different times of seed exposure to the pathogen (6, 12, 18, 24 and 30 hours), as well as the possibility of storing the inoculated seeds. The mycelial growth of S. sclerotiorum in the osmotically modified media, the germination of seeds subjected to inoculation and, after the storage of inoculated seeds, the emergence on the soil and the pathogen transmission were evaluated. According to the obtained results, the addition of mannitol to the PDA medium, at the osmotic potentials -0.3, -0.6 and -0.9 MPa, as well as NaCl, -0.3 and -0.6 MPa, does not limit the mycelial growth of S. sclerotiorum; the solutes used until the osmotic potential -0.9 MPa did not interfere in the germination of soybean seeds. Satisfactory infection levels were obtained with 24 hours of incubation in culture medium with water restriction. The viability of both the seeds and the pathogen is maintained after the storage of seeds inoculated in medium with water restriction.

Escleródios de Sclerotinia sclerotiorum permitem ao fungo conservar seu poder patogênico por vários anos no solo, todavia, são incipientes os estudos que relacionam a massa e a localização dos escleródios no solo com sua patogenicidade. Desta forma, objetivou-se avaliar se a massa dos escleródios e a sua localização no solo podem interferir na germinação carpogênica de S. sclerotiorum. Os escleródios foram pesados e classificados em seis classes, (C1) escleródios com massa inferior a 0,01 g, (C2) 0,01<0,02 g, (C3) 0,02<0,03 g, (C4) 0,03<0,04 g, (C5) 0,04<0,05 g e (C6) 0,05<0,06 g. Depois, foram acondicionados em caixas gerbox contendo solo umedecido até 100% da saturação, sendo alocados na superfície do solo e enterrados a uma profundidade de 3 cm. Os gerbox foram incubados em câmara BOD, temperatura de 20ºC e fotoperíodo de 12 h. Notou-se maior percentual de germinação carpogênica nos escleródios colocados na superfície do solo em todas as classes analisadas. Foi observada uma tendência em aumentar a germinação carpogênica com o aumento na massa dos escleródios, constatando-se nos escleródios colocados na superfície, germinação de 37,5; 62,5; 75; 87,5; 100 e 100%, enquanto que para os escleródios enterrados foi de 0; 37,5; 37,5; 62,5; 62,5 e 62,5%, nas classes C1, C2, C3, C4, C5 e C6, respectivamente. Ao final das avaliações, os escleródios enterrados apresentaram menor número de estipes e apotécios. Os escleródios C4, C5 e C6, quando na superfície do solo originaram mais estipes e apotécios, enquanto que para os enterrados, apenas os escleródios C5 e C6 proporcionaram maior número de estipes e apotécios por escleródio.

Sclerotia of Sclerotinia sclerotiorum allow the fungus to conserve its pathogenic power for several years on the soil; however, there are incipient studies that relate the sclerotium mass and location on the soil to its pathogenicity. Thus, the aim of this study was to assess if the sclerotium mass and location on the soil can interfere in the carpogenic germination of S. sclerotiorum. Sclerotia were weighed and classified into six classes, (C1) sclerotia with mass inferior to 0.01 g, (C2) 0.01<0.02 g, (C3) 0.02<0.03 g, (C4) 0.03<0.04 g, (C5) 0.04<0.05 g, and (C6) 0.05<0.06 g. Then, they were stored in gerbox containing soil moistened up to 100% saturation and were allocated to the soil surface and buried to a 3-cm depth. Gerboxes were incubated in a BOD chamber, temperature of 20ºC and 12 h photoperiod. The percentage of carpogenic germination was higher for sclerotia that were placed on the soil surface in all analyzed classes. Carpogenic germination tended to increase with the increase in the sclerotium mass; for the sclerotia placed on the soil surface, germination was 37.5, 62.5, 75, 87.5, 100 and 100%, while for buried sclerotia, it was 0, 37.5, 37.5, 62.5, 62.5 and 62.5% in C1, C2, C3, C4, C5 and C6, respectively. At the end of evaluations, buried sclerotia had fewer stipites and apothecia. On the soil surface, C4, C5 and C6 sclerotia originated more stipites and apothecia, while for buried sclerotia only C5 and C6 provided larger number of stipites and apothecia per sclerotium.

Os extratos e óleos essenciais extraídos de plantas têm grande potencial no controle de fitopatógenos, por sua ação fungitóxica direta, inibindo o crescimento micelial e a germinação de esporos, e pela capacidade de induzir o acúmulo de fitoalexinas nas plantas. Objetivou-se com esse trabalho avaliar o efeito de diferentes extratos metanólicos e óleos essenciais sobre a ferrugem asiática da soja (Phakopsora pachyrhizi). O experimento foi realizado em casa-de-vegetação e sala de incubação. Utilizou-se o delineamento inteiramente casualizado com sete tratamentos e dez repetições. A cultivar de soja utilizada foi a BRS 245RR; os tratamentos constaram de óleos essenciais e extratos metanólicos dos gêneros Schinus terebinthifolius (aroeira-pimenteira), e Trichilia silvatica (quebra-machado, catiguá-vermelho), surfactante Tween 80 a 1% (v/v) e a testemunha água. As plantas foram pulverizadas com os respectivos tratamentos e inoculadas artificialmente com o fungo cerca de 24 horas depois. As características analisadas foram: número de folíolos/parcela; índice de clorofila; altura de plantas; intensidade da ferrugem asiática da soja; número de folíolos com ferrugem; número de folíolos com aspecto queimado. As plantas pulverizadas com extrato de Schinus a 5% (m/v) e óleo de Schinus a 1% (v/v) mostraram maior intensidade da doença, comparadas às pulverizadas com água. Estes dois tratamentos e o óleo de Trichilia a 1% provocaram uma maior incidência de folíolos queimados, indicando fitotoxicidade à cultura.

Extracts and essential oils from plants have a great potential to control phytopathogens due to their direct fungitoxic action, inhibiting mycelial growth and spore germination, and their ability to induce the accumulation of phytoalexins in plants. The objective of this work was to evaluate the effect of different methanol extracts and essential oils on Asian soybean rust (Phakopsora pachyrhizi). The experiment was carried out in a green house and incubator. A completely randomized experimental design of seven treatments and ten replications was used. The soybean cultivar was BRS 245RR; the treatments consisted of essential oils and methanol extracts of the genus Schinus terebinthifolius (Brazilian pepper tree) and Trichilia silvatica (quebra-machado, catiguá-vermelho), the surfactant, Tween 80 (1% v/v), and water, as a control. The plants were sprayed with their respective treatments, and then artificially inoculated with the fungus about 24 hours later. The characteristics analysed were: number of leaflets per plot; chlorophyll index, plant height, intensity of the Asian soybean rust, number of leaflets with rust, number of leaflets with a burnt appearance. The plants sprayed with 5% (m/v) Schinus extract, and 1% (v/ v) Schinus oil showed greater intensity of the disease compared to those sprayed with water. These two treatments and 1% Trichilia oil caused an increased incidence of burned leaflets, indicating phytotoxicity to the crop.
